Sydney Freediving Courses:
The Underwater Academy is Sydney’s longest running freediving school, with multiple instructors across a range of disciplines. Our instructors include sponsored spearfishers, professional freedivers and underwater cinematographers and photographers; marine scientists and engineers with specialties in hydrodynamics. We usually have a couple of instructors on the course, so you can pick and choose your specialty.
We offer the most comprehensive freediving course in Sydney. Taught over two and half days, instead of the usual two, we’ve maximised the pass rate with a preparatory theory/ practical session before the weekend starts. We believe this is essential to mastering somewhat complex physiological challenges, and is part of our dedication to helping you succeed in adapting to the new skills of freediving.
Collectively, the decades of experience both in the disciplines, and also in highly specialised teaching, means we know the best way to overcome the hurdles students face, and adjust the teaching methodology and direction to cater for individual needs.
While we don’t claim to be the deepest divers in the world, we specialise in teaching freediving. We also pride ourselves in being highly adaptable; bringing a wealth of knowledge from our other areas of expertise into your weekend.

These are our three introductory courses - which focus on building the solid fundamentals of Freediving or Spearfishing - There are no pre-requisites for either of these courses, except that you can swim with some confidence.
These are our deeper and more advanced courses, which require you to have worked your way through the fundamentals (AIDA 2)
Once you are AIDA 4 and feel like passing on your knowledge and love of the ocean, we have both an internship program leading to instructors certification, or a straight 10 day program.
